EPDM Roofing in Minneapolis, MN

What is EPDM?

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) roofing is a type of synthetic rubber roofing membrane commonly used in low-slope or flat roof applications. It is known for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to weathering.

EPDM roofing is made from a synthetic rubber compound that is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, UV radiation, ozone exposure, and other environmental factors. It is available in large sheets or rolls, which are typically adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted to the roof substrate.

Installation Process

The installation process of an EPDM roof involves the preparation of the roof surface by cleaning and removing any debris, loose materials, or existing roofing materials. The EPDM membrane is then rolled over the roof surface and adhered using an adhesive or mechanically attached with screws or plates, or ballasted with gravel or pavers. Then the seams of the EPDM membrane are joined together using a combination of adhesive and/or heat to create a watertight seal between the membrane sheets. Lastly, flashing details needs to be installed to prevent water infiltration.

Advantages of EPDM Roofing

EPDM roofing is highly durable and can withstand a wide range of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, UV exposure, hail, and high winds. It has a proven track record of long-term performance. The rubber-like properties of EPDM allow it to expand and contract with temperature changes without compromising its integrity. This flexibility helps prevent cracks and leaks, even in harsh climates.

EPDM roofing requires minimal maintenance over its lifespan. It is resistant to mold, algae, and punctures. Regular inspections and simple cleaning are usually sufficient to keep the roof in good condition. EPDM roofing is available in white or reflective variants, which can help reduce energy consumption by reflecting sunlight and reducing heat transfer into the building. This can lead to lower cooling costs in hot climates. Lastly, EPDM roofing is considered a cost-effective option due to its long lifespan and low maintenance requirements. It offers good value for the investment, especially when compared to some other roofing systems.

Disadvantages of EPDM Roofing

Proper installation of EPDM roofing requires skilled and labor expertise. The seams must be carefully sealed to ensure a watertight barrier, and flashing details need to be installed correctly to prevent water infiltration. EPDM roofing is not compatible with certain substances, such as oils, greases, and solvents. Exposure to these substances can cause the rubber to deteriorate and lose effectiveness. While EPDM is generally durable, it can be susceptible to punctures and tears if subjected to sharp objects or heavy foot traffic.
